- How do companies evaluate potential drivers?
- 1. Driving History
Companies are typically looking at 3 things: Moving violations over the past 5 years (also Careless/Reckless charges), major preventable accidents over the past 3 years & DUI's over the past 5 - 15 years. Companies will check both your DAC & MVR
- 2. Employment History
Basically, when & where you have worked for the past 5 years. The major problems drivers run into, besides bad references, are hopping from job to job (many companies have a max. number of jobs allowed over the last 5 years), large gaps in employment (over 3 months) & driving for Owner Operators while being paid "under the table". The bottom line is, if you didn't claim the pay on your taxes, it's unverifiable & WILL present you with problems. Avoid at all costs!
- 3. Criminal Record
They check criminal backrounds on every new hire. 2 main things that hurt drivers: felonies & drug charges. Most companies will not hire a driver that is currently under probation
- 4. Failed Drug Screens
I mention this because it is an automatic lifetime disqualification for many companies & if you fail with one company, they will be more than happy to put it on your record so that everyone knows. Behave yourself!
- 5. Orientation
After accepting your application, the company you elect to work for will set up an orientation date for you to come take a road test, a DOT physical & drug screen. Orientations typically last 2 - 3 days, at which time you'll fill out your benefits paperwork, be shown how your particular run operates & company procedures. (The company you have signed on with will arrange your transportation & hotel room at no cost). At the end of your orientation, you'll be assigned a truck & re-routed back through your house to retrieve your gear & start your new career!
